William attended Walla Walla High School and later joined Lakeside School in Seattle. He joined Whitman College but studied at the University of Puget Sound. He got his bachelor's degree in literature and a minor in psychology from Whitman College.
After he graduated from college he worked as an announcer on American Forces Network television. He worked as a milkman after he was discharged from American Forces Network and moved to Hawaii to pursue a career in television.
