However, at some point in his childhood, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, then to New York City. Later, Gilchrist eventually settled down in Toronto, Ontario.

Gilchrist is the frontman of the Los Angeles based band Whelm and Phalanx. In an interview with the Bandcamp, Gilchrist talked about his anxiety while managing his singing and acting profession, 

"I had this fear that if people found out what kind of stuff I was into, or even how I dressed normally, that it would ruin my acting career. And I had another fear that if people in the metal scene knew that I acted, they’d be like, ‘You’re a fucking poser. Get the fuck out.’ I was terrified that those two worlds would cross, and I would be ratted out of both scenes.”

After appearing in the television show Queer as Folk, Gilchrist made his big-screen debut with the Canadian film The Right Way. Since then, he has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows. 

He co-starred as Marshall Gregson, the son of the lead character portrayed by Toni Collette on the comedy-drama series United States of Tara from 2009 to 2011.

The news of Huang and Gilchrist dating started surfacing online after Gilchrist shared a picture with Michelle on Instagram in May 2017 with the caption, "Hit up NYC with my girl."
