Dame Harriet Walter is an English TV, movie, and theatre actress. Born Harriet Mary Walter on September 24, 1950, in London, England, Walter has found success in all avenues of the performance arts. 

She is a Tony Award-nominated stage performer, she has been a fixture of British television since 1980, and she has appeared in commercially successful and critically beloved movies.

The indelible mark she left on British drama led to her being appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2011.

Here are seven facts about Dame Harriet Walter:      

7. Tony Award-Nominated Theatre Performer

Harriet has had a prolific stage career dating back to the mid-70s. Her career took off after she made her Broadway debut in 1983. She has appeared in theatre productions of Twelfth Night, Three Sisters, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra.

She won the 1988 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival for her work performing for the Royal Shakespeare Company. For her performance as Elizabeth I in the Broadway production of Mary Stuart, she was nominated for a 2009 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.  

6. Married since 2011 to the American Actor, Guy Schuessler

Walter has been married since 2011 to the American stage actor, Guy Schuessler (who goes by the stage name Guy Paul).

They tied the knot on May 21, 2011.

Before her marriage to Guy, she was in a relationship with the English actor, Peter Blythe. She was with Blythe from 1994 until his death in 2004 due to lung cancer.   

5. Stars in the Historical Drama, Belgravia

Walter was part of the main cast of the historical drama series, Belgravia. Based on the eponymous 2016 novel by the English novelist Julian Fellowes, the series is set in Brussels and follows the Trenchard family and their ambition to establish themselves among the city's elites.

The series stars Philip Glenister as James Trenchard, Tamsin Greig as Anne Trenchard, and Emily Reid as their daughter, Sophia Trenchard. Walter plays the Countess of Brockenhurst, Caroline, in the show.

Other cast members include Saskia Reeves, Jeremy Neumark Jones, Nicholas Rowe, James Chalmers, and Alice Eve, among others.  

The series premiered on ITV on March 15, 2020, while Epix took over broadcasting for the US, and the show premiered in the US on April 2, 2020.

4. Plays Villanelle's Mentor in Killing Eve Season 3  

2020 saw Walter not only starring in the ITV historical drama, Belgravia, but she also stepped into Phoebe Waller-Bridge's world of female assassins in Killing Eve season 3.

She plays Dasha, the mentor of the Russian assassin, Villanelle (played by Jodie Comer). The series also sees Sandra Oh returning as the lead, Eve Polastri, along with  Fiona Shaw and Kim Bodnia also reprising their roles. 

3. Movie Appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rocketman

Walter has amassed an extensive body of work at the big screens throughout her career. Her most famous appearances include the 2015 space-opera, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where she plays Kalonia.

She also played Helena Piena in the 2019 Elton John biopic, Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton

Her other notable movie credits include Sense and Sensibility, Bedrooms and Hallways, The Governess, Onegin, Villa des Roses, and Bright Young Things.

2. TV Appearances in Downton Abbey, Succession, The Crown

Besides her recent starring roles in Belgravia and Killing Eve, Walter has left an indelible mark on English television. 

Most notably, she played Lady Shackleton from 2013 to 2015 in the English historical drama, Downton Abbey.

She also portrayed Clementine Churchill in the Netflix historical drama, The Crown.

Besides that, she has also played Marion Guthrie in the historical adventure series, Black Sails; Lady Caroline Collingwood in the HBO satirical comedy-drama, Succession; and Lady Margaret Beaufort in the Starz historical drama miniseries, The Spanish Princess.
