    Bong Joon-Ho is a South Korean director, producer, and screenwriter who gained worldwide recognition from his 2019 black comedy thriller Parasite. The movie that earned $165.4 million worldwide also earned him a Golden Globe for three nominations in the 77th Golden Globe Awards, winning for the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language and also four Academy nominations. 

    That being said, Parasite is not the only masterpiece that the Asian director and screenwriter pulled out of his hat. He is involved in about a dozen movies either as a director, writer, or producer.

    Having started as a writer in 1997 in the feature film Motel Cactus, and later joining the 1999 movie Phantom: The Submarine, Joon-Ho’s resume is not as long as it may seem from the work he has done on his movies.

    The actual net worth of the writer and director has not been disclosed yet, but some sources have estimated his net worth to be $5 million. 

    Parasite       

    Parasite is a 2019 black comedy thriller movie that starred Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-Kyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, and Choi Woo-Shik. Bong Joon-Ho made a significant influence on the movie; writing the script, producing, and directing the movie.

    The film, which was received by the critics positively with a rating of 99% on the Tomatometer and a 93% audience score, is nominated for several awards, having already won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Foreign Language and Best International feature Film in the 92nd Academy Awards.

    The movie also fared well on the box office earning $165.4 million over a budget of $11 million.

    The recognition of Joon-Ho started from his work in his 2006 movie, The Host. The movie was internationally praised and positively received by the audiences.

    His other successful project came in 2017 as the Okja. The Okja released as an independent movie, but since Netflix produced the movie, the indie-genre audiences didn’t treat the premiere of the movie that well; however, the movie received great reviews from the critics and was included in the New York Times’ Ten Most Influential Films of the Decade.

    A television series adaptation of the 2013 movie Snowpiercer is set to be aired in 2020 in which Joon-Ho is set to serve as executive producer. Similarly, Parasite movie has also been rumored to be adapted into a miniseries for which the release date is yet to be announced.

    Short Bio

    Bong Joon-ho was born on September 14, 1969, to Bong Sang-gyun and Park Soyoung in Daegu, South Korea. He is the youngest of four children of Sang-gyun and Soyoung. His father was a Professor, graphic designer, and art director who passed away in 2017, and his mother was a full-time housewife. 

    Bong joined Yonsei University in 1988, majoring in sociology. In 1992, he enrolled in South Korea's military service to fulfill the mandatory obligation set by the South Korean government.

    Bong is married to Jung Sun-young and has a son Bong Hyo-min with her.
