Edi Gathegi is a Kenyan-born American actor. He was born on March 10, 1979, in Nairobi, Kenya, but moved with his family to Albany, California, where he grew up.
Here are seven facts about Edi Gathegi:
Most recently, Gathegi plays A.D. Singe in the anthology drama series, Brairpatch.
The series is based on the crime-drama novel by American author Ross Thomas and stars Rosario Dawson, stepping into the shoes of an investigator, Allegra "Pick" Dill, who investigates the mysterious death of her sister, Detective Felicity Dill.
There was a time in history when the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight vampire-romance novel series was the biggest thing in the world, at least among the gullible teens.
A lesser-known fact is that Edi Gathegi was in three of the movies from the franchise. He played the vampire Laurent, first appearing in the movie that started the franchise rolling: 2008's Twilight.
He reprised his role for the sequel to the 2007 movie, 2009's The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
He also had a brief appearance in the fourth movie, 2011's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I -- albeit in a brief flashback scene.
Gathegi's television portfolio boasts numerous appearances in acclaimed shows like CSI: Miami, Veronica Mars, Nikita, and Into the Badlands.
He had a prominent role in the Fox medical-drama series, House, as Dr. Jeffrey Cole. He appeared in a total of seven episodes in 2007.
Gathegi also has a running stint in the NBC crime-thriller, The Blacklist, as the mercenary Matias Solomon -- a role that he landed in 2015.
He also reprised his role as Matias Solomon in the spin-off series, The Blacklist: Redemption, albeit this time as part of the main cast.
Edi has successfully shielded his personal life from the tabloids despite being a recognized name in the industry.
So it came as a surprise to everyone when news got out that the Kenyan-American actor had married the Romanian model Adriana Marinescu.
They started dating in 2016 and Gathegi popped the question in spring 2018.
The rumors were pretty much confirmed when Adriana changed the last name on her social media handles to Gathegi. The two can be seen cozying up on their Instagram.
It is hard to imaging Gathegi doing anything but acting since he has taken so well to it, like fish to water. But acting was not Gathegi's first career choice.
Edi aspired to become a professional basketball player and entered the training program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, but after sustaining a knee injury, his professional career ended abruptly and prematurely.
Edi is nothing if not adaptable and he turned his sights to acting. He took classes and enrolled in the Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
He graduated in 2006 and started performing on-stage in such plays as Othello, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Two Trains Running, and Cyrano de Bergerac, to name a few.
Gathegi made his on-screen debut in the 2006 action flick Crank, starring Jason Statham, and the rest is history.
In his own words, Edi said of his injury and having to change careers,
"At U.C. Santa Barbara, I was undeclared as an undergraduate and I was interested in playing basketball. I was training with some of my teammates and I blew my knee out. I decided that I wanted to take a somewhat easy course because I was depressed, so I took an acting class. I fell in love with acting. I auditioned for their conservatory, got in, and called my parents and told them that this is what I wanted to do with my life. They supported me, and the rest is history. As for grad school, I applied to a lot of schools and by the graces of God or whoever, I got into N.Y.U., which I am told is the best one."
Gathegi has been a fixture in numerous movies -- many of which have gone on to become blockbusters.
Besides the Twilight movie series, he has also appeared in X-Men: First Class, Aloha, Criminal Activities, The Watcher, and Pimp, to name a few.
Arguably his biggest role to date is his turn as Cheese in the 2007 neo-noir mystery-thriller, Gone Baby Gone. The movie marked the feature-film directing debut of Ben Affleck and starred Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan.
The movie also starred Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Amy Ryan and was a critical and commercial success.
