7. He is of Irish and Italian Descent

Dylan's Irish ancestry comes from his paternal family. On the other hand, his maternal grandfather was of Italian descent. Dylan's maternal grandmother comes from a Irish, English, and French ancestry.

McDermott was born on October 26, 1961, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Diane Marino and Richard McDermott. He and his sister, Robin McDermott, were raised by their maternal grandmother, Avis Marino, in Waterbury.

5. Dylan Lost His Mother At the Age of Five

Following the divorce from Richard, Dylan's mother, Diane, had a live-in relationship with a guy named John Sponza, a local heroin addict with a record. On February 9, 1967, when Dylan was five years old, his mother was found in her home with a gunshot wound.

At the time, the medical examiner ruled her death as an accident; however, later, police evidence suggested Sponza as the culprit. To this day, the circumstances of her death remain a mystery.

Dylan was legally adopted by Richard's third wife, Eve Ensler, who is a  playwright, performer, feminist, and activist. The 58 years old actor shares a close bond with his step-mother. As a matter of fact, McDermott changed his birth name, Mark, to Dylan after Ensler suffered a miscarriage. She had plans to name her own child as Dylan. 

4. A Supporting Role in American Horror Story: 1984

Dylan has been part of the Emmy nominated horror anthology series American Horror Story since its first season. He played as Dr. Ben Harmon in the Murder House, reprising the role in the eighth season, Apocalypse. 

Besides, McDermott also had supporting roles in other AHS seasons as Asylum and, most recently, 1984, which is based on the slasher film of the 80s. Dylan appeared as Bruce, a murderous hitchhiker, in three episodes of the ninth season.

McDermott debuted with the 1987 war movie Hamburger Hill. He appeared in films like Steel Magnolias, Twister, Neon Empire, Jersey Girl until finally getting his big breakthrough in 1993 with the box-office hit  In the Line of Fire.

His notable television credits include Tales from the Crypt, Ally McBeal, The Practice, American Horror Story: Murder House, and The Politician. Maggie Q and Dylan McDermott's relationship rumors sparked in fall 2014. They met on the set of CBS's Stalker, where Maggie played as Beth Davis while McDermott portrayed Jack Larsen.

They got engaged in January 2015; however, in February 2019, McDermott and Maggie ended their relationship after a four-year engagement.

Previously, the 58 years old actor was married to David & Layla actress Shiva Rose. They tied the knot on November 19, 1995, and have two daughters: Colette McDermott, born on May 1996, and Charlotte Rose McDermott, born on September 8, 2005.

Rose and McDermott separated in September 2007. Their divorce was finalized on January 2, 2009.

1. Is One of the Main Cast of Hollywood

McDermott plays as Ernest "Ernie" West in the drama web television miniseries Hollywood. The show revolves around the group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in Hollywood after World War II.

Dylan's character, Ernie, is based on Scotty Bowers. Scotty was a United States Marine who served in World War II. He arrived in Hollywood in 1946 and reportedly became a pimp until the 1980s. 

Along with Dylan, the ensemble cast include David Corenswet, Darren Criss, Laura Harrier, Joe Mantello, Jake Picking, Jeremy Pope, Holland Taylor, Samara Weaving, Jim Parsons, and Patti LuPone.
