His Dark Materials Is A Fantasy Drama Expected To Wow Audiences With Its Second Season In 2020-Its Plot, Cast, Their Characters, And Rating

His Dark Materials is a fantasy drama series released on 3 November 2019. The series premiered on HBO and instantly became a fan favorite, in fact, many fans of the HBO network have touted the show to fill the fantasy void left by the end of Game Of Thrones.  

The series follows an ensemble of layered characters who have been played by an excellent cast. The show’s fantasy revolves around manifestations of the human soul in the form of creatures called daemons.

His Dark Materials: Plot  

The novel series, His Dark Materials, is the brainchild of Philip Pullman, and the show is based on these fantasy books by the author. The show’s central premise is the story of Lyra, an orphan who is the main character.  

She discovers darks secrets and meets a lot of friends and foes along the way while searching for a missing friend she also starts uncovering the secret link of Dust and a series of kidnappings.      

All of the story takes place in an alternate universe where magic, religious beliefs, and science are alike. Lyra also starts unraveling the mystery of stolen children and vile secrets regarding their disappearance.

Lyra’s world is not the only one in the show as she discovers Will, a boy who possesses a knife capable of cutting windows between worlds.

Slowly realizing that she is part of a story bigger than she first thought, Lyra discovers that she is a child of prophecy and everything, even her parents’ death is linked with the war against celestial powers in their multi-verse.

Cast And Their Characters  

The main character on the show is Lyra Belacqua, played by Dafne Keen. She is the central character on the show, which kicks things into motion. Keen is capable of convincing audiences that she is a troubled youth fighting against her demons and celestial powers alike.

Lyra's dead mother, Marisa Coulter, is played by Ruth Wilson. She projects power and the adventurous nature of the character as she is in the books.

The main character’s father is played by the incredible James McAvoy, who portrays the explorer and scholar with class.

The Master of Jordan College is played by Clarke Peters, who is kind of a father figure to the orphan Lyra and the head of the Jordan College.

Will Parry (played by Amir Wilson) is the boy with the Subtle Knife, a knife able to cut windows between realms, his story later intertwines with the main lead’s.

The Magisterium is also important to the story, and Ariyon Bakare’s character Lord Carlo Boreal is the authoritative figure at the Magisterium.  

James Cosmo plays as Farder Coram, an elderly Gyptian.

Anne-Marie Duff plays as Ma Costa, a Gyptian woman. 

Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Lin-Manuel Miranda.

His Dark Materials has brought cast members, including established actors and rising stars together, making it a perfect mix of experience and excitement. 

Reception And Rating

HBO’s fantasy show has been well received all around the world; in fact, it has garnered acclaim from fans and critics alike.

IMDB rates the show, His Dark Materials at 8/10. Each episode of the first season of the show has a rating of more than 8.1, with the highest-rated episode being The Daemon-Cages, which got an 8.8/10.

Similarly, common sense media has also rated the show 3/5, and it has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

About The Second Season

According to Digitalspy, BBC and HBO’s collaborative efforts have had mixed ratings, but a second season has already been filmed.

Although the exact release date for the show has not been set, various online reports have claimed that the show will be released towards the end of 2020, like the first season it may be released in November.   

In a similar fashion, the original cast of the show is expected to return and provide the build on the first season’s end.
