    Jeff Koinange was born Jeff Mwaura Koinange on 7 January 1966 in Nairobi to Frederick Mbiyu Koinange and Hilda Wambui Ngoima.   

    He holds Kenyan citizenship and is African-American by ethnicity. He went to Kingsborough Community College and graduated in 1989. He later went to New York University and got a Bachelor of Arts (broadcast journalism).

    Koinange is married to Shaila Koinange as of February 2020; they have a son named Jamal Mbiyu Koinange. They tied the knot in 1998. Before this, he was married to a girl named Sonya. The duo separated in 1994.
