She is the daughter of mother Margaret Hutton Smith and father Nathaniel Smith. She had two elder twin brothers Ian and Alistair (died 1981). She is of British nationality, and her ethnicity is white.

    She studied at the Oxford High School until she was 16 and then attended Oxford Playhouse where she studied acting.
