Film Career And Oscar-Winning Role
Mary started her career on the big screen in 1978 with the film Goin' South. She followed up this with another minor role in 1979’s Time After Time. The year later, she played a role on Melvin and Howard as Lynda West Dummar.
Melvin and Howard was a film based on the real-life of Melvin Earl Dummar, the man who claimed to have saved tycoon Howard Hughes in the Nevada desert in 1967. Later, he also claimed that Hughes had given him around $156 million as part of his will.
Although the film did only mediocre at best, Mary’s performance as Lynda West Dummar got her an Oscar win in the Best Supporting Actress category.
