In November 2019, Netflix confirmed that the adaptation of Todd Grimson's eponymous 2011 horror novel, Brand New Cherry Flavor, had been greenlit with "Alita: Battle Angel" actress Rosa Salazar at the helm.
The eight-part horror miniseries is set to release sometime in 2021. Here is what we know so far about the plot, cast members, and release date.
Brand New Cherry Flavor is based on the eponymous 2011 horror novel by American author Todd Grimson.
The series is set in 1990s Los Angeles and follows Lisa Nova, an aspiring filmmaker who seeks vengeance on people who she believes have wronged her. She enlists the help of the leader of a local LA biker gang but soon realizes that she may have gotten more than she bargained.
Her world is seized by unexplained hallucinations, ancient entities, and supernatural forces as she tries to contend with her mind and her body.
Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor will be helmed by Canadian-American actress Rosa Salazar, of Alita: Battle Angel and Maze Runner fame, as Lisa Nova.
She will be joined by Catherine Keener (of Being John Malkovich, Into the Wild, Get Out, and Kidding fame), Manny Jacinto (of The Good Place and Top Gun: Maverick fame), Eric Lange (of Lost and Narcos fame), and Jeff Ward (of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Channel Zero: No-End House fame).
In late 2020, Deadline reported three more names confirmed for the cast. Hannah Levien (of Supernatural, The Magicians, and Siren fame), Leland Orser (of I Am The Night and Berlin Station fame), and Patrick Fischler (of The Right Stuff and Defending Jacob fame) have all been confirmed for the series.
The series will be co-created and co-written by Nick Antosca (the showrunner on Syfy's Channel Zero and Hulu's The Act) and Lenore Zion (of Billions and Channel Zero), with the former also stepping in as the executive producer.
While it is still too early to tell, and with the COVID-19 pandemic pushing filming and production of several films and television shows, an official release date for Brand New Cherry Flavor has yet to be announced.
However, looking at Netflix's previous track record, it is speculated that the series will be available to stream sometime in 2021.
