Darren Criss is an American actor, singer, and songwriter. Born Darren Everett Criss on February 5, 1987, in San Francisco, California, the 33-year-old is most known for his acclaimed roles in the Fox musical comedy-drama, Glee, and the FX anthology crime drama, American Crime Story.

7. Married to Longtime Girlfriend, Mia Swier

Criss married his longtime girlfriend, Mia Swier, on February 16, 2019. Swier is a writer, producer, and musician, herself.

Their wedding was a lavish affair that went on for four days, starting from Valentine's Day that ended with the couple tying the knot in the Ace Hotel in New Orleans, on February 16. 

On his decision to get married in New Orleans, Criss said:

“New Orleans holds a special place in our lives. It’s full of fond memories from a lot of time spent there over the years. It encapsulates our collective personality: a combination of hedonism and elegance. It’s a unique, colorful town full of celebration and music. Also, it’s equidistant from our home cities of Los Angeles and New York, where most of our guests were coming from. Suffice it to say, they don’t do things in New Orleans the way they do in other parts of the world—and we wanted to be sure our wedding was unlike anything our guests had experienced before.”

Criss and Swier had been in a relationship for seven and a half years before getting engaged in January 2018. A little a year over and they tied the knot.  

6. Played Blaine Anderson in Glee

Criss first gained mainstream recognition for playing Blaine Anderson in the Fox musical comedy-drama TV series, Glee.  

Criss played the openly gay Blaine, a student at Dalton Academy, and was a recurring character in season 2. He was later promoted to the main cast in season 3 and appeared as such throughout the rest of the six seasons.   

The show ran from May 19, 2009, to March 20, 2015, and Criss was featured prominently. 

5. Starred in Netflix Miniseries, Hollywood

Most recently, Criss starred in the Netflix drama miniseries, Hollywood.  Set in the "Golden Era of Hollywood", the series follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers who want to make it big in Hollywood, no matter the cost. 

One of the show's creators was Ryan Murphy, who Criss had worked with previously in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

He played Raymond Ainsley, one such aspiring actor, and the boyfriend of Camille Washington (played by Laura Harrier). 

The cast also featured an ensemble of such actors as David Corenswet, Joe Mantello, Dylan McDermott, Jake Picking, Jeremy Pope, Holland Taylor, and Samara Weaving.       

The series premiered on Netflix on May 1, 2020, and despite lukewarm critical reception, the Criss's performance was one of the points of praise. 

4. Played Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

Criss traded in his boyish good looks and charisma to step into the shoes of the serial killer, Andrew Cunanan, for the second season of the FX anthology true-crime series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Based on the murder of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace along with four other people, Criss played the perpetrator, spree killer, Cunanan, in the series.

His portrayal is widely regarded as the highlight of the entire series and won him the 2018 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, as well as the 2019 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie.  

Édgar Ramírez played the Italian fashion mogul, Gianni Versace, with Ricky Martin and Penélope Cruz rounding out the main cast as Antonio D'Amico and Donatella Versace, respectively.  

3. He is an Accomplished Theatre Performer

Criss, like many before him, made his acting debut on-stage. He played Cesario at the age of 10 in the theatre production of Fanny. He also played Mauro in the musical, Do I Hear a Waltz? and Beauregard Calhoun in Babes in Arms.

He went on to feature prominently in such plays as A Christmas Carol, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Pride and Prejudice, and A Few Good Men.

Upon his graduation from the University of Michigan, he co-founded the StarKid Productions company and starred as Harry Potter in the comedy musicals, A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, and A Very Potter Senior Year.

On Broadway, his theatre credits extend to such plays as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.   

2. His career as a Musician and Singer

Before he ever was an actor, Criss was a musician. He started taking violin lessons at age 5 and self-taught himself guitar, piano, drums, mandolin, and harmonica. 

He debuted his independently-produced solo album, Human EP, on July 20, 2010. He released his second EP, Homework, on December 15, 2017.

In March 2017, Criss founded the indie-pop band, Computer Games, with his brother, Chuck Criss. They debuted their album, Lost Boys Life EP, later that year.  

He was also a fixture of musical theatre for the better part of his adulthood. Even during his on-screen run, Criss continued fostering his love for music. 

In the musical TV comedy-drama Glee, Criss played the lead singer of an acapella group, and his cover of Katy Perry's hit single "Teenage Dreams" peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and to date, has sold 1.3 million copies.

He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for the song "This Time" off of the Glee soundtrack.
