Virgin Contract & Transition to Island Records

In April 2001, Mariah Carey left Columbia Records and signed a groundbreaking contract with Virgin Music worth $100 million for five albums. Adjusted for inflation, it amounted to $150 million, making it the largest contract in music history at that time.

Her first album under the Virgin contract, "Glitter," released on August 18, 2001, was accompanied by a film of the same name. Unfortunately, both the album and the movie received negative reviews and were considered commercial failures, exacerbated by the timing of the film's release shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Although "Glitter" sold 3 million copies, it fell short of expectations and resulted in Virgin Music paying Mariah $28 million to terminate the contract early. In total, she received nearly $50 million for producing just one album for Virgin.

Following her departure from Virgin, Mariah signed a $24 million deal with Island Records for five albums. Her albums with Island had moderate success, with the standout being "The Emancipation of Mimi" in 2005, which sold 10 million copies worldwide.

Epic Records and American Idol

After a brief stint with Def Jam, Mariah joined Epic Records in 2015, where she is still signed today. In 2012, Mariah earned $18 million as a judge on one season of American Idol.

Additionally, in 2015, she secured a $30 million contract for a two-year Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, contributing to her total earnings of $27 million that year, making her one of the highest-earning women in music.
